Style 4 – Scandinavian Design Style

An offshoot of the mid-century movement, Scandinavian design brought a populist, minimalist look to the forefront of today’s modern living. Although most people associate it with IKEA, there’s a lot more to the style. It is centered around warm functionality, clean lines, flawless craftsmanship and understated elegance. The use of light is considered to be extremely important, and many Scandinavian-styled homes are characterized by the use of earthy muted tones, natural materials and minimal ornamentation.  White walls and soft dove grey, neutral and blue textiles give off the right ambiance of a Scandinavian interior mixed with light or natural colored wood floors. Scandinavian furniture should feature wood, either natural, painted (but revealing some of the natural wood grain) and reclaimed wood all working together to create a warm Scandinavian space.

To create the look you can find Scandinavian inspired pieces at Room and Board, Dot & Bo, and IKEA.  As this design style is also an offshoot of mid century modern, you can also find great pieces from Rove Concepts and DWR, just look for natural wood pieces with clean, simple lines and high versatility and functionality.

This bedroom has all the elements of a typical Scandinavia style bedroom – light wood floors, transparent grey washed wood furnishings, simple, modern silhouette in the design of the bed and side tables, neutral “greige” walls, rug and linens.  Adornments are kept to a minimum with just a small side table lamp and a few decor items.

These two dining rooms are textbook examples of Scandinavian style dining rooms.  Both have Eames DSW molded plastic inspired chairs (one with natural wood dowel legs and the other with chrome legs.  You also see clean lined dining room tables made of wood and both have simple, industrial inspired dome pendants.  Each room maintains the natural palette with light wood floors and keeps the rooms simple and clean with minimal decor items.
