Style 2 – Mid-Century Modern Design Style

Originating in the ‘50s and ‘60s, this look is reminiscent of the Rat-Pack days in Palm Springs or the “Mad Men” sets we see today and produced some of the most iconic pieces in modern design. It is characterized by simple, elegant lines, natural shapes and chic minimalism, with frequent use of molded plastic, natural wood, and metals. Pops of deep, rich, earthy colors such as orange, yellow, greens and chocolate brown add to the décor.  Its pieces are versatile and can easily complement other design styles – they are simply, well-designed objects, with a timeless look. Mid-Century Modern is having a resurgence today with the Baby Boomers who grew up with mid century designs which hold a sentimental connection to their youth as well as with the Gen X population, who’s reference point to the style has been acquired after years of exposure to the art direction of old movies and television shows, not to mention the teak and stainless-steel contents of their parents’ living rooms.

For your shopping and inspiration needs, many of the products found at DWR (Design Within Reach),  West ElmJonathan Adler and Dwell Studio are mid-century classics. Rove Concepts creates beautiful mid-century furniture reproduced from classic designs inspired by the likes of Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames,  and Florence Knoll.

This Mid-Century Modern dining room has all the classic elements of the time: clean, organic lines of the chairs, Saarinen inspired carrara marble top table and the use of brass in the table and chair legs and in the wall coverings.  It use of the traditional colors of the time with the turquoise chairs, yellow curtains and white and black accents keep the design true to it’s roots but with an updated feel.

This living room has a more traditional mid century look with avocado colored curtains, sculptural art, deep brown couch and flokati style shag rug.  All the profiles of the furniture are low to the ground with a heavy use of lucite (a favorite back in the 50s and 60s) in the side table and side chairs yet the look remains fresh and classic.
